With Brexit day fast approaching, and much still to be decided about the details of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, many businesses across the North Highlands have concerns about how Brexit will impact them.

Help is at hand, however, in the form of a free business breakfast being hosted on 1 March 2019 in Thurso by the Europe Direct Information Centre (EDIC) which is managed by Caithness Chamber of Commerce.

Taking place at the Pentland Hotel from 08:00 to 11:00, the event will feature expert speakers from Inverness Chamber International, the Local Export Partnership for the Highlands & Islands, Scottish Development International, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, Enterprise Europe Network, and Skills Development Scotland.

As well as hearing presentations from the speakers, the event will feature a Q&A session giving businesses the chance to ask their questions direct to the panel.

For those that can’t join the event in person, the event will be streamed live on Facebook to allow those who can’t attend to watch the presentations and ask questions live.

Businesses wishing to attend can contact the Europe Direct Information Centre or the Chamber on europedirect@caithnesschamber.com or by calling 01847 500108.

To watch the event online, simply visit https://tinyurl.com/edicbreakfast for more details.

In addition, the EDIC team will be hosting public drop-in sessions at Thurso and Wick Libraries for individuals with questions about how Brexit might affect them. These will take place from 12:30-14:00 (Thurso) and 14:30-16:00 (Wick), with no registration required.

This year Europe Direct Information Centre North Highlands & Islands (EDIC), in participation with North Highland College UHI (NHC) welcomed local Primary 7 pupils to a celebration of Europe Day.

Pupils from Pennyland Primary, Newton Park and Melvich Primary participated in a variety of European themed activities including European cookery demonstration and tasting session, a treasure hunt based on European flags and interactions with staff and students from the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) to hear some interesting facts and life events based on their own home countries which included France, Germany and Italy.

Speaking after the event, Trudy Morris, Chief Executive of Caithness Chamber of Commerce which manages EDIC, said:

“Europe Day is all about celebrating European peace and unity, and it was a good opportunity to remind ourselves that – whatever the Brexit discussions may bring – we have a long history with Europe and the EU and that maintaining this relationship brings not just economic but cultural and social benefits as well.

“It was great to see the pupils so engaged and enthusiastic, and they were full of fascinating questions for the staff from ERI. We hope that the day’s activities will have a long-term impact and inspire them to broaden their horizons and explore all the opportunities that life has to offer.”

Lilian Wark, Head Teacher at Newton Park Primary, said:

“This was a great learning experience for the pupils. They really enjoyed their morning and found the experience very interesting, particularly learning about and trying the different European foods.”

Barbara Bremner, Project Manager at the ERI, said: “It was an excellent and enjoyable opportunity to share our European culture with young pupils. Europe is such a blend of culture and creativity that sharing it can only enrich us for the best. It was a delight to see how well the pupils responded, their interest and motivation, not only to the food tasting but also through discussion and interaction with European staff.”

Caithness Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that from 1 January 2018 it will play host to Scotland’s only Europe Direct Information Centre (EDIC). The aim of this Centre is to provide information to businesses and the general public about EU matters, and to enable them to make their voices heard on any areas of EU activity that are of concern to them.

Starting from 1 January 2018, any members of the public in the North Highlands and Northern Isles who want to find out more about EU rights, funding, living / working / studying in EU countries, and much more, will be able to get easy access to the information they need.

As well as having a walk-in centre at the Chamber’s offices in Thurso, the EDIC will also have a dedicated phone number, email address and social media presence, and the team will also be doing information events throughout the year.

Trudy Morris, Chief Executive of Caithness Chamber of Commerce, said: “We were delighted to win this contract to host Scotland’s only EDIC. The bidding was highly competitive, and we were one of just 12 out of 35 organisations in the UK which were successful in securing a contract, so this is a real coup for the North Highlands.

“The Chamber remains neutral on the ongoing debates around Brexit and the EU, and we will not be speaking for the European Commission on any subject, topic or policy. Our sole aim with this centre is to ensure that businesses and individuals in the North Highlands and Islands have access to factual information on Europe and Brexit.

“As the Brexit process continues, there are obviously a number of complicated issues under discussion, and it is important that local citizens, businesses and organisations are able to have their key questions answered as soon as the information becomes available.

“This will be an exciting new challenge for the Chamber, and we look forward to playing our part in ensuring that those living, working and studying in the North Highlands and Northern Isles have the information they need to make informed decisions about Europe.”
