Dounreay dome work ‘almost complete’

Press and Journal
A Dounreay team is close to completing one of the highest hazard clean-ups in the UK nuclear industry.
Staff worked round the clock over the festive period to remain on course to destroy all the liquid metal coolant in the famous dome-shaped reactor by the end of March.

Over 161 tonnes of the toxic coolant - an alloy of sodium and potassium - has been removed and processed through a bespoke chemical plant.
The material is heavily contamanited with radioactive caesium after being used during the 18-year lifetimeof the DFR reactor, which was shut down in 1977.
Site contractor DSRL is confident it will dispose of the remaining 6.3 tonne stockpile by the end of March.
